The term slot is used to describe the area between the face-off circles in an offensive zone. The slot can refer to two different places on the ice: the low slot, the area in front of the goaltender between the face-off circles, and the high slot, the area in the middle of the ice above the face-off circles. Its purpose is to facilitate scoring opportunities and is the most important part of the offensive zone. But before we get into the details of slot terminology, let’s learn about the different types of slots.

The builtin amountOfMoney, duration, and number mappings map to any amounts and types of slot types. Except ordinal numbers, these types are not supported by default. If a custom slot type is desired, it can be defined in the utterance. For example, a location slot is used to mark the location of an utterance. These types of utterances are mapped to different slots by using regular expressions.

The term “slot” comes from the late 14c. and means a hollow at the base of the throat, above the breastbone. It is derived from the Old French esclot, whose origin is obscure. Another term for slot is Old Norse slod. The term slots became common in the 1520s. However, the modern meaning of the word “slot machine” dates back to 1888.
