Basically, poker is a card game that involves a group of people playing around a circular or oval table. Players are dealt five cards, which they must use to form a hand. The aim of the game is to make the highest hand possible by betting until all other players fold.

Poker can be played with as many as eight players. The ideal number is six to eight. In the case of a tie, the highest unmatched fifth card wins. A poker hand is made up of five cards, including two hidden “hole” cards. During the final betting phase, players reveal their cards.

The first bettor must make the minimum bet during the first betting interval. After the first betting interval, players can raise or check. A raise adds more to the bet in front of the player, while a check makes the same bet as the opponent.

After the flop, players can make a second bet. When a player folds, he or she is said to have a draw. This means he or she will no longer compete for the pot.
