In the most common poker games, a 52-card deck is used. Cards are dealt face up and face down. A player may bet, raise, or fold.

To win a hand, a player must make a good bet. This can be a small bet, or a big bet. Many games have a limit on how much a player can bet. If a player tries to bet more than this, the game is said to be over.

The best poker hand is a five-card flush. A straight is also a possible outcome, although it was not introduced until the American Civil War.
