Poker is a card game in which players compete to make the best possible five-card hand. The player with the highest ranked hand wins the pot, which consists of all the chips that have been raised so far in that particular round. Depending on the rules of the specific game, one or more players may be required to place an initial amount of money into the pot before the cards are dealt. These are called forced bets and they come in the form of antes, blinds or bring-ins.
Poker can be played with up to 10 players. The game is traditionally played with cash or poker chips. Players place these in a pot, with the player to the immediate left of the dealer acting as the button (or “dealer”). The button moves clockwise after each hand.
Once the cards have been arranged, players then aim to make the best poker hand using their own two personal cards and the five community cards in the middle. The winning player must either have a higher ranked hand than everyone else, or continue to bet on the strength of their hand until all other players drop out of the pot.
Trying to outwit your opponents is often a futile endeavour, and can lead to mistakes and ill-advised bluffs that cost you money. The key is to play your strong value hands as straightforwardly as possible, so that your opponent’s calling range remains limited.
