Slot

The word slot is a transitive verb that refers to cutting or making an opening in timber. Its origin is in Old French and is not entirely clear. It is also related to Old Norse slod, which is a synonym. The term slot appears for the first time in the 1520s. Its modern meaning of “airplane ticket” first appears in 1888. Slotted timber is the most common type used at airports to separate planes.

The term slot is also used for the area between the faceoff circles in the offensive zone. There are two distinct types of slots, referred to as the low slot and the high slot. The low slot is the area directly in front of the goaltender, between the two faceoff circles. The high slot, on the other hand, is the area in the center of the ice above the faceoff circles. The term is not used interchangeably when referring to a player’s position in the slot.

A slot can have more than one value, and in that case, the language must know how to map multiple values to the same slots. For example, if the entity value is New York, it may also have the synonyms Big Apple and NYC. This way, the user can tell the software that the phrase or word is mapped to New York. A person can also enter several synonyms by using the Select Slot feature. Then, the user can easily add, edit, and delete the slots by selecting them in the Slots tab.
